WTO TRAINING COURSES
30th WTO Trade Policy Course begins
Government officials from 19 countries attended on Monday 20 September the opening session of the 30th WTO Trade Policy Course (TPC). The working language of the Course is Spanish. The participants will have the unique opportunity to follow, from the inside, the functioning of the WTO. In addition, they will have the chance to witness how the Organization starts working on the decision adopted by the General Council on 1 August 2004, in which the Council emphasized "Members' resolve to complete the Doha Work Programme fully and to conclude successfully the negotiations launched at Doha".

Throughout the three-month training, which will end on 10 December,
the 19 participating officials will become acquainted, through lectures,
debates, round tables, attendance at WTO meetings and simulation exercises,
with virtually all the issues dealt with in the framework of the WTO.
Participants will also have the opportunity to visit other international
organisations located in Geneva, namely UNCTAD, ITC, and WIPO, and to
discuss trade-related aspects of the work conducted by these organizations.
The programme also includes a session with World Bank representatives. At
the opening session, participants were encouraged to actively take part in
the forthcoming training and to develop and strengthen a solid network of
contact by attending meetings and discussing with delegates and WTO experts.
From the 19 Spanish-speaking participants, 17 come from Latin America and
the Caribbean (including one from a least developed country), and 2 from
Central and Eastern Europe (one of which is an acceding country).
The 30th TPC is the fourth such course organized this year at the WTO
Headquarters. Several specialized courses will complement the training
activities conducted by the ITTC in Geneva during the last quarter of 2004.
