At COP26, Prime Minister Mottley called on “leaders to lead? One year later, public and private investment is falling far short of what is needed to limit catastrophic global warming - the health, environmental and economic consequences of which will be disproportionally felt by vulnerable populations.

Closing this gap requires a radical redesign of global financial architecture, and a shift away from the dominant narrative that the government role is to de-risk and enable private sector investment. Instead, states must mobilise, direct and shape finance to align with climate and health goals. This panel will reflect on the changes needed in ideas, institutions, and policies to empower states with the fiscal space and tools to lead.

Description

This session focuses on the key role that international standards can play to develop a green steel industry, whose contribution to carbon reduction is underpinned by a framework of measurement and certification that promotes innovative technology and, together with the WTO, can reduce trade friction. The session will also explore how good practice and standards can be co-developed and transferred to the developing world, capitalizing on UN institutions and capacity building programmes. It will also explore how to leverage green finance to accelerate the transformation and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

• Discuss the implications of these standards on trade and requirements for infrastructure systems in place
• Discuss opportunities for developing countries to integrate into green steel value chains, leveraging green finance and capacity building.
